when fog had a smell
1 min read
It’s a foggy morning here in Wilkes today. I remember the fog in Florida when I was growing up. Back in the 70’s, South Florida was still very “green”. Most of the western parts of Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties were still uninhabited swamp. Swamps are rich and verdant, both full of life and decay. And it has a particular odor. It wasn’t often that the mornings would cool to the point that we would get fog, but on those mornings when we did, the mists would carry that sweet sour pungency.By the time I was in high school, development had pushed far enough west that there was little swamp for the fog to be scented by and I was too busy with teenager things to notice. But this morning my inner child reminded me of when fog had a smell.
