All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten
2 min readI had someone ask me in a chat the other day a gotcha question:
“What did you think ‘woke’ is?”
I turned it around and asked them if they ever read “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”. Please read the excerpt here.
What do I mean by that?
When we are in Kindergarten we are taught to share, we are taught to treat people with kindness, and we are taught to clean up after ourselves. In a nutshell, we are taught the Golden Rule.
“Woke” is living by the Golden Rule.
If we are on the playground and I have the ball when you don’t, we can share and play together. If someone isn’t being included , invite them to join in. If I went and played in the sandbox and left my trucks out in the rain, then they might rust and no one else will be able to use them, so I need to bring them in when I’m done. I need to clean up after myself. I need to wash my hands after I’m done in the bathroom so I don’t get sick and so I don’t make someone else sick.
These are all little things that show respect for myself and respect for others.
“But real life is different…”
No it isn’t.
If you see someone that is hungry, feed them.
If you want to prevent sickness, take preventative measures (vaccinate, wash hands, etc.)
Treat people with respect. People? All people. Pick a letter. Pick a color. Pick a religion. Pick any reason that may divide us. So what if we are different? Vive la différence!
It all comes down to a statement of ethics: do to others as you would have them do to. You learned it Kindergarten. And that’s woke.
